The "Aha!" Moment
It all started with a simple frustration: "I just want to make my PDF smaller!"
You know the drill - you're trying to email an important document, and boom! "File too large." So you google "make PDF smaller" and find a dozen sites that want your email, your credit card, or worse - they slap a giant watermark on your document. Ugh! 😤
That's when PDFSmaller was born. The name says it all - when you just want to make your PDF... smaller! (See what we did there? 😉) But then we thought, why stop there? Let's make ALL the PDF tools people need, completely free, with absolute privacy, and zero nonsense.
Our Latest Achievement: Real PDF Encryption!
NEWWe did the impossible! Everyone said you can't do real PDF encryption in under 1MB (Cloudflare's limit). Existing libraries are 2-20MB. So what did we do?
We built our own encryption engine from scratch! Full AES-256 (PDF 2.0 / ISO 32000-2) andRC4 128-bit encryption + decryption in ~15KB each, using only the Web Crypto API and pdf-lib. It implements Algorithms 2.B, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 from the spec and produces PDFs that open correctly in Adobe Acrobat, Chrome, and every major PDF reader.
While others gave up or used placeholders, we persevered and created something truly unique. Then we open-sourced it all as npm packages for other developers to use! 🚀

This is our core promise. Everything happens right in your browser. Your files never take a trip to our servers. We can't see them, store them, or access them in any way. It's like having a PDF workshop on your own computer - because that's exactly what it is!

Actually, Genuinely, Truly Free
Not "free trial" free. Not "5 files per month" free. Actually free. Forever. We keep the lights on with some non-intrusive Google Ads - no popups, no overlays, no annoying interruptions. Just subtle ads that help us keep the servers running and the tools free for everyone. It's a fair trade, we think!

The Tech Stuff (For The Curious)
We use modern JavaScript libraries and browser APIs to run everything locally. Think powerful PDF libraries like PDF.js and pdf-lib doing all the heavy lifting right in your browser - it's like having Adobe Acrobat's little cousin living in your browser, except this cousin is free, doesn't need updates every week, and won't try to sell you a Creative Cloud subscription.
Everything is open-source friendly, privacy-first, and built with love (and probably too much coffee ☕).
Our Technical Approach
We don't just use off-the-shelf solutions. Our engineering team has built a custom processing pipeline that pushes the boundaries of what browsers can do with PDFs.
WebAssembly Compression
MozJPEG compiled to WASM for near-native compression speed. This is the same encoder used by Firefox and many professional image tools, running directly in your browser at close to C-level performance.
Web Worker Architecture
Multi-threaded processing using Web Workers so the UI stays responsive during heavy operations. Your browser won't freeze even when crunching a 500-page document.
Origin Private File System (OPFS)
Browser-native storage for handling files up to 1GB without memory issues. OPFS lets us process massive PDFs that would crash other browser-based tools.
Streaming Architecture
Files are processed as streams rather than loaded entirely into memory, keeping peak memory usage at ~150MB even for 1GB files. This means reliable performance on laptops, tablets, and phones alike.
Custom Encryption Engine
Hand-built AES-256 + RC4 encryption and decryption engine using Web Crypto API. When existing libraries were too large for our deployment constraints, we wrote our own from the PDF specification and published them as open-source npm packages.
Privacy by Architecture
Other PDF tools say "we don't share your files." We went further: your files physically cannot leave your device. Here's why:
No backend server. PDF Smaller is a static site (Next.js with output: 'export'). There is literally no server endpoint to receive files. We couldn't collect your data even if we wanted to.
Browser sandbox. All JavaScript runs within your browser's security sandbox. The code has no ability to transmit file contents anywhere.
Verify it yourself. Open DevTools, go to the Network tab, process a file, and watch: zero outgoing requests containing your data. We encourage you to check.
No content analytics. We track page visits (Google Analytics), but we have zero telemetry on file content, document data, or anything you process.
Privacy by design, not privacy by policy. This isn't a promise we make in a Terms of Service document. It's an architectural guarantee baked into how the application is built.
